The Second World War

Pomurje was occupied by the German army in April 1941 and, after ten days, power in Prekmurje was handed over to the Hungarians. They reintegrated the province into an administrative division, as it had been before 1919. The uprising, organised by Communist Party members, was quickly suppressed by arrests and trials, and was only revived in the autumn of 1944. Prekmurje was liberated in April 1945 by soldiers of the Red Army and the only partisan military unit of the Prekmurje troops.
